Patient Support

Everyone who has fertility treatment at The Sussex Downs Fertility Centre is different. While some might prefer to rely on family or friends to support them through treatment, others might feel more comfortable talking to someone independent

Throughout your fertility treatment, we’ll do everything we can to ensure you feel comfortable, secure, and supported, and that you fully understand your treatment and any implications it might have.

We treat every one of our patients individually, and the amount of our treatment support services you use is entirely up to you.

Counselling

Not every patient will want counselling, but if you want someone to talk to before, during or after your treatment, speaking with a specialist fertility counsellor can be a helpful way to understand and process your thoughts so you are in the best possible emotional state when contemplating your future . You can book an appointment at anytime during  your treatment.

Supporting you on your Fertility Journey

Everyone who is affected by infertility is welcome to join the group irrespective of the stage they are at in their infertility journey and their sexuality, including heterosexual and same sex couples, men and women, whether currently single or in a relationship.

What We Offer

  • Mutual support and the chance to share information.
  • An opening to find a new support network and reduce your feelings of isolation.
  • The opportunity to be amongst people who understand what you’re going through and what you may be feeling.

What we do

We aim to offer the chance to talk to others also going through infertility, to share feelings and experiences, with members supporting each other on this rollercoaster journey.

At some meetings we may divide into smaller groups, such as men only, to offer the opportunity to discuss specific matters relevant to these individuals.

Open Evenings: This is an informal event where you can speak to one of our clinical team members about what types of treatments we offer. The session can be booked on-line and it’s a free event for anyone to join.

Useful Information for Patients During Treatment

Stress Management

There is some debate about whether stress directly impacts fertility, we want all our patients to feel relaxed during their treatment – though we know that staying relaxed is sometimes easier said than done! It’s normal to feel a little stressed when you’re having fertility treatment, some patients find alternative therapies like massage, acupuncture and hypnotherapy helps them feel calm, and there are lots of other ways you can manage your stress levels:

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a simple, and increasingly popular, form of meditation, and you can practise it wherever you are. It’s all about bringing your mind into the present and paying attention to your surroundings, so it can be very useful when it comes to managing anxious thoughts. Read more about mindfulness on the NHS website.

Self Care

It’s important that you look after yourself properly during treatment. Having a happy, healthy body will help to keep your mind calm and reduce anxiety, so do your best to try and exercise and eat well. We try and remind patients to set aside time for yourself to focus on the things you enjoy, whether that’s going to the gym, reading a book or just watching your favourite programme on TV.
